Galapagos Giant Tortoise
Introduction
The Galapagos giant tortoise (Chelonoidis nigra) are the largest living species of tortoise and are found in the seven Galapagos islands in Ecuador (Stanford 2010). There were about 15 different sub- species present at the islands but 4 of them are now extinct and all the remaining ones are considered endangered. Different sub-species are present in diverse islands. The total remaining population of tortoise in the Galapagos islands is around 15,000 ((Milinkovitch et al. 2015). Darwin studied the tortoise closing while developing his theory of natural selection (Caccone et al. 1999). This review paper will cover physical description, life history, ecology, behavior and human interaction of the Galapagos giant tortoises.
